For the last few days, we have been enjoying time in sunny, beautiful Colorado! For those of you who are new around here, I moved to Colorado in 2011 as a recent college graduate, not having any idea what the future would look like, and fell head over heals for this incredible state. I met my husband and some of my closest friends in Denver, and while Matt and I moved back to Northern Virginia for job opportunities and to be closer to family a little over two years ago, we absolutely jump at any chance to visit our old stomping grounds in CO!
We stayed in a wonderful Airbnb unit with three full bedrooms and three full bathrooms–plus an additional loft with two sets of double-bed bunks–with my family for the last few nights right on Keystone mountain. Staying mountain-side is the best as you can roll out of bed, jump into your ski gear, and then walk a few minutes to the gondola and ski for the entire day. It also makes for an easy walk home after an exhausting day of skiing–getting to the hot tub quickly to soak those sore muscles is always a plus! It was pretty darn cold this weekend while skiing, but I swear by these ski socks to keep my feet warm and these fitted ski pants to keep my legs warm (recommend going down 1 size in the pants).
We skied at Keystone on Friday & Saturday (Mozart run is a favorite), and then hit up Vail Mountain on Sunday to ski a very full day. At Vail we hit the Back Bowls (China Bowl & Blue Sky Basin) right at the start of the morning, and it was snowing pretty significantly making visibility a slight issue–despite this, the snow was disappointingly bare in spots–we still had a total blast though! I ski primarily with my Dad, as my brother, husband, and their guy friends tend to be a bit more adventurous than I want to be (aka. always going down the mountain on the hardest possible routes–including through the trees, which isn’t for me #selfpreservation!).
On Monday, we took our time relaxing at the condo in the morning in front of the fireplace, and then drove the hour and a half back to Denver to spend time at one of my best friend’s new house. Last night, we gathered at Punch Bowl Social with a handful of our closest Denver friends, and caught up over cocktails (I actually stuck to their non-alcoholic drinks as I’m doing no-alcohol January–the Jalapeno Limeade was amazing!) and lobster fries!
This morning, I went to a delicious breakfast at the Wooden Spoon Cafe & Bakery with my friend Emily and her precious puppy, Ralphie, while Matt met up with a few old co-workers to walk the site of a new apartment complex he was developing prior to us leaving Denver (near the Denver Country Club). The buildings are absolutely beautiful, and it’s so cool to see the project nearly complete, especially since Matt contributed so much energy to the project when he was in Denver!
While our trip is about to come to an end, visiting Colorado is the best way to spend our PTO. It’s the perfect mix of being active + relaxation, and it’s always nice to see some of our favorite people! We will be back in a few months for a wedding, and I can’t wait!
